3 Jackson County school districts seek millage renewals on August ballot

JACKSON, MI - Some Jackson County voters will decide whether to renew 18-mill non-homestead operating millages for three school districts in the August primary election.

The Hanover-Horton School District, Jackson Public Schools and the Michigan Center School District are seeding renewals of their operating millages on the Aug. 6 ballot. The taxes apply only to non-homestead, industrial, commercial and non-qualified agricultural property and do not include primary residences.

Hanover-Horton’s proposal seeks to increase the authorized millage rate of 17.2144 mills by two mills for 10 years between 2024 and 2033.

This would restore millage lost due to rollbacks caused by the Headlee Amendment to the Michigan constitution which limits increases in taxes collected to the rate of inflation. The millage was last approved in 2015.
