Voters to consider Manistee library, tax renewals

MANISTEE COUNTY — Voters across Manistee County will have a pair of proposals to consider on the Aug. 6 ballot.

Residents will vote on renewing the current tax levy to support the county library. The renewal is for a 1 mill tax for the next three years. This translates to $1 per $1,000 of taxable valuation. If approved, it is expected to raise approximately $1.5 million in the first year.

In 2018, Manistee County voters passed a millage renewal of 1 mill for operations and building maintenance at the Manistee County Library and its branches through 2023. The 2018 millage was approved by 72% of voters — a historic high for the library, according to executive director Julie Cirone.

The Manistee County Board of Commissioners convened a special session in April to ensure the renewal could be added to the August primary ballot.
