Group backed by prominent developer urges 'No' vote on hotel tax hike

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A conservative political fund bankrolled by a West Michigan apartment developer is campaigning against the Aug. 6 ballot proposal to raise Kent County’s hotel tax to fund projects such as Acrisure Amphitheater and a professional soccer stadium.

TGIF Victory Fund, a political action committee funded by Land & Company owner Dan Hibma, has put up billboards and sent text messages urging residents to reject the Kent County Sports and Entertainment Facilities Proposal.

The proposal would raise the county’s hotel tax from 5% to 8%.

Hibma, who owns a downtown condo at Plaza Towers and has repeatedly raised concerns about the amount of noise that will be generated by the amphitheater, could not be reached for comment. The prominent Republican donor is married to former Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land, and his business owns 17 apartment complexes across West Michigan.
