One-room schoolhouse millage on the ballot in Van Buren County

BANGOR TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A one-room schoolhouse still operating in Van Buren County is hoping voters help keep it running by approving a millage renewal in the Aug. 6 primary election.

The Wood School is a member of the Van Buren Intermediate School District but is its own district and has its own board.

The school was established in 1849 and built in 1869. Board secretary Dennis Sorenson said the school offers a unique option that is harder to find across the state.

“We have a pretty much 10-1 student ratio here,” Sorenson said. “The state dictates that we have to have two adult figures here in the school at all times so we usually have a census of around 20 to 24 kids.”

Sounds like each student gets plenty of attention from the teacher with a 10-1 ratio. Thats incredible.
