Kent County lodging tax increase leading in polls late Tuesday

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A proposal to raise Kent County’s hotel tax from 5% to 8% to fund sports and entertainment venues was leading in the polls late Tuesday night.

As of 11:15 p.m., with 167 of 240 precincts reporting, the “yes” votes on the proposal were leading 56% to 44%.

The Kent County Sports and Entertainment Facilities Proposal would help fund projects such as Acrisure Amphitheater, an 8,500-seat soccer stadium, and a John Ball Zoo aquarium. It’s supported by business and tourism groups such as the Grand Rapids Chamber and Experience Grand Rapids, and by a host of local elected officials.

The tax is paid by guests who purchase a hotel room in Kent County.
