Bond failure prompts Whitmore Lake schools to scale back upgrade plans
WHITMORE LAKE, MI - Whitmore Lake Public Schools administrators plan to make district upgrades when and where they can after the defeat of a millage proposal at the ballot box on Tuesday.
A $53.5-million bond proposal was rejected by voters in the Aug. 6 primary election, with 1,145 no votes against 754 yes votes in Washtenaw County. In the Livingston County portion of the district, 65% of voters were also opposed to the bond, with 334 saying no and 179 saying yes.
Planned projects funded by the bond included upgrades to security systems and infrastructure throughout the district, including repairing parking lots, driveways and sidewalks; and improving playgrounds and athletic fields.
Throughout the bond process, the district has continued to work on improving safety and security on all campuses, Superintendent Tom DeKeyser said in a statement posted on Facebook after the election.
