Just 8 votes oust incumbent in razor-thin Ypsilanti City Council race

YPSILANTI, MI - An Ypsilanti City Council incumbent lost the primary election by just eight votes.

Challenger Amber Fellows beat current City Council member Evan Sweet to represent Ypsilanti’s 3rd Ward with 525 votes. Sweet garnered 517 votes, according to unofficial election results. There were three unassigned write-ins.

Fellows is slated to go unchallenged in the November general election, as no Republican candidates filed for the seat.

It was “humbling” to see how close Tuesday’s race was, she said.

“We already knew that the votes existed in the ward,” Fellows said. “It was really a matter of mobilizing it – mobilizing people to come out for a primary which is historically very low turnout.”
