Marine City Commission approves placing charter amendments on ballot

Marine City commissioners on Aug. 1 approved ballot language for five proposed amendments to the city charter.

The five sections that commissioners are looking to amend include Section 3.3, Compensation of Commissioners; Section 3.11, Relationship of Commission to Administrative Service; adding the new Section 3.20, which would be a requirement to set by resolution a list of policies and procedures; Section 5.4, Removal From Office, and Section 13, Contracts and the Purchase and Sale of Property.

Commissioners initially approved the resolutions at their June 20 meeting. At the time, City Attorney Robert Davis said passing the resolutions is one step toward getting the amendments on the ballot, and the commission will still have town hall meetings and other meetings to discuss the language.

At the Aug. 1 meeting, Davis said he and City Clerk Jason Bell met with the state attorney general’s office. They were given the suggestion to expand the language that would be on the ballot, as they had not used all 100 of the words they were allotted for each item.
