Marijuana group seeks charter amendment on Imlay City ballot
IMLAY CITY Two years ago, voters in Imlay City opted into a ballot measure that allowed for the establishment of medical marijuana facilities within the city limits.
Since then, no such facilities have opened in the city, and the same group that promoted the November 2022 proposal is now trying to get a charter amendment on the citys November 2024 ballot to expand access to medical marijuana in the city.
During the Imlay City Commission meeting on Tuesday, City Clerk Dawn Sawicki-Franz said that a group promoting the establishment of medical marijuana operations in the city submitted a petition with signatures to the city office on July 30, which was the deadline for ballot proposals for the citys Nov. 5 general election.
After vetting and checking the signatures, Sawicki-Franz said she found that there were not enough valid signatures on the petition to proceed with placing the measure on the ballot. She said several signatures were disqualified because they came from residents in Imlay and Arcadia townships outside the city or were not legible. Altogether, 130 valid signatures were gathered for the petition, but 137 were required to get the issue on the ballot.
