Recount for Ottawa County District 9 commission seat begins

OTTAWA COUNTY, MI – The ballot recount for Ottawa County’s District 9 commission seat has begun at the county’s Fillmore Street complex in West Olive.

The recount began a little after 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, at the request of current District 9 Commissioner Roger Belknap.

Belknap lost the Aug. 6 Republican primary election for the District 9 seat to former Ottawa County Commissioner Phil Kuyers. Kuyers received 4,070 votes while Belknap received 2,997, a difference of 1,073 votes. Currently, Kuyers will face Democrat Angela Stanford-Butler in the November general election.

In his petition filed Monday, Aug 19, Belknap cited concerns about “complications and outages of online reporting being ‘down’ during the evening of Aug. 6, 2024.” He also claimed he was sent screenshots that appeared to show he had more votes than Kuyers.
