Waterford Township voters to vote on millage to buy part of OCC campus

Waterford Township voters will decide this November whether to approve a $36 million bond to purchase 51 acres of Oakland Community College's Highland Lakes campus and turn it into a community and recreation center.

The township's board of trustees and the community college's board of trustees approved the transaction in May. The 51-acre southern portion of the campus on Cooley Lake Road will be sold to the township for $2.8 million if voters this fall approve the bond proposal.

A bond to build a new community center failed in 2018, but the township's existing recreation center on Williams Lake Road has since deteriorated more, Wall said.

"Our current rec center's best years are behind it, but we're making do with what we have until we're able to find something new," Wall said. "We've got a purchase agreement with OCC to purchase the property, but it is contingent on a bond being approved for the purchase and renovation of the buildings and property on our November ballot."
