Macomb County voters to select their sheriff, county commissioners and more
Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham, a Democrat, is running for reelection against former state Rep. Terence Mekoski, a Republican who also ran for sheriff in 2020.
Most other countywide elected officials in Macomb County are also up for election next month. Clerk and Register of Deeds Anthony Forlini, a Republican, is being challenged by Democrat David Adams, and Republican Treasurer Larry Rocca is facing Democrat Mathew Churchwell. Public Works Commissioner Candice Miller, a Republican, meanwhile, is competing against Democrat Kevin Higgins and Libertarian Jim Fulner.
Ten of the 13 Macomb County Board of Commissioner seats also are contested races. The election will determine whether the board will remain Republican controlled. The body currently has nine Republicans and four Democrats.
Board Chair Don Brown, a Republican, said the incumbents "have done a good job serving their constituencies," and he doesn't anticipate any of them to lose their seats. Brown, who is competing against Democrat Susan Hier for the District 1 seat, said partisanship hasn't played a major role on his board.
"Because we just all work together to get things done, and there are very few partisan issues that divide us," unlike the state Legislature and the federal government, he said.
