MI-HD13: Michigan House: Xiong (D) and Singer (R) face off again for Macomb County's new 13th District

A rematch is set between Democratic state Rep. Mai Xiong and Republican Ronald Singer for southern Macomb County's 13th House District seat, which Xiong originally won in a special election about six months ago.

Back in April — in a special election that occurred after Lori Stone vacated her House seat to become mayor of Warren — Xiong beat Singer with 65% of the vote. She became Michigan's first Hmong American lawmaker and her victory ensured Democrats maintained control of the lower chamber.

But the district looks different now after getting redrawn by the state's redistricting commission. Instead of centering on Warren and a slice of Detroit, it now runs east from Warren, into Roseville and St. Clair Shores — picking up a different bloc of voters and potentially introducing newfound intrigue into the contest.

Both candidates have filled much time in recent weeks knocking on doors across the new-look district ahead of the Nov. 5 election, and told The Detroit News their conversations with voters often have had similar themes focused on the rising cost of living.
