Eight candidates running for the State Board of Education. Only two will win

The candidates are Theodore Jones and Adam Frederick Zemke, Democrats; Tom McMillin and Nikki Snyder, Republicans; Scotty Boman, Libertarian; Ted Gerrard and Christine C. Schwartz, U.S. Taxpayers; and Mary Anne Hering, Working Class.

Jones, 43, is a senior director at the nonprofit Global Detroit, a community development organization that focuses on immigrants and talent. Jones says he has two years of teaching experience and one year of experience as a school social worker. A former legislature director in the Michigan House, Jones spent six years as a central office administrator for Detroit Public Schools Community District, where he led policy development and implementation, managed the district’s relationship with its board of education and worked on building strategic partnerships and increasing fundraising capacity.

Jones says his focus would be to boost education funding to improve outcomes for all students.

"It will allow for the hiring, retention, and professional development of more teachers, addressing the current teacher shortage," Jones said. "It will also move us closer to making universal Pre-K a reality, enable local school districts to offer more effective interventions for learning and mental health (including helping students fully recover from the COVID-19 pandemic), ensure that all students learn in well-maintained school buildings, and help us achieve a one-to-one student-to-computer ratio in classrooms."
