Who will run to replace Mayor Mike Duggan? 'The floodgates have opened'

Who will succeed Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan is a wide-open question after the three-term mayor said Wednesday he won't seek another term, a move that one political consultant said opens the "floodgates" for potential successors who will be expected to continue the city's momentum.

No one has officially announced a candidacy for mayor when Duggan's term ends at the end of 2025. But two current Detroit City Council members, President Mary Sheffield and Fred Durhal III, and former City Council President Saunteel Jenkins have formed exploratory committees, which usually precede an official candidacy. An exploratory committee allows prospective candidates to raise money and hire staff for a potential run for office.

Other potential candidates are exploring their options, including business leaders, pastors and former unsuccessful candidates for elected office, said Mario Morrow Sr., a Southfield-based political analyst who follows Detroit politics. Businessman Dennis Archer Jr., the son of former Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer, and former Detroit Police Chief James Craig told other media outlets earlier this year they were also considering running for mayor.

“I think the floodgates have been opened,” Morrow said Wednesday. “It is a great opportunity for Detroit to look at new fresh faces.”

He really has Detroit on the right track. Mayor Archer was okay, but Detroit was not as energized as it is today. I really hope the city doesn't fall into corrupt hands. Unfortunately, there have been some shady mayors. The next mayor really just needs to keep Detroit on the same course - continued growth, but also revitalization, mixing the old and new.
