U.S. Army veteran Tom Turner announced his campaign for Michigans 57th House District seat on Tuesday after leaving a military position over disagreements with the Trump administrations policies at the Department of Defense.
According to his campaign website, Turner worked as a lawyer after receiving a law degree from the University of Michigan. In 2019, he accepted a position in the U.S. Army as a judge advocate. In addition to serving overseas, Turner says he worked as a prosecutor and advised military commanders on the rule of law.
Turner resigned from the position last year, citing policy changes implemented by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, including deploying soldiers in American cities.
In 2025, the Department of Defense made policy changes that kicked brave Soldiers out of the military based on their identity, regardless of medical waivers, deploying active-duty military members in American cities, and others, the website says. These changes were bad policy and contrary to Toms morals, values, and faith. So, Tom chose to resign his active-duty commission and return to Michigan to find new ways to give back to his community.

(17 posts)I took a brief look at Michigan's state legislative races, and I believe that this particular race might warrant a closer look.
Some very quick research indicated that 68.5% of MI HD-57 overlaps with MI-10, which is host to an open seat race which the Democrats have a serious chance of winning this year. MI HD-57's incumbent, Thomas Kuhn, won by 14.4 points in 2024 despite being overspent by his Democratic opponent Aisha Farooqi, so this is probably going to be a heavy lift. However, I might consider doing some more deep diving for this race at the end of this month once a final list of candidates is ready.
This information was obtained from Daily Kos, Ballotpedia, and State Navigate (without paying for any tiers) if anyone wants to take a look at the sources I consulted.
If people don't want these types of posts from me, I apologize, and won't make them in the future.
