Gov. Gretchen Whitmer invites U.S. women's soccer team to Michigan
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer wants members of the U.S. womens soccer team to come to Michigan, extending an invite to the World Cup champions in a social media post.
In a video posted to Twitter Tuesday afternoon, Whitmer congratulated the team on their victory and said she and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson hope members of the team can make a stop in Michigan.
We will celebrate your victory, talk about women in sports and we can even talk about pay equity over a cup of tea, Whitmer said, alluding to forward Alex Morgans celebratory tea sip hand motion after scoring a goal against England.
Last month, Whitmer announced the creation of a task force to promote more opportunities for women and girls in sports, chaired by Benson. The 15-member task force was tasked with assessing current options for female athletes and coming up with recommendations by March 2021.
