New Year's Eve downtown Detroit ball drop canceled second year in a row

A formal celebratory ball drop will not take place in downtown Detroit this year, sinking the spirits of those who planned on attending.

The Social Connection, Ferndale-based host company of "The Drop," cited sponsorship funding, scheduling and other logistical issues as reason for the event's cancellation.

This is the second year in a row The Drop, which began marking the New Year in 2010, did not come to fruition.

Last year, The Drop was canceled due to timing and space problems.
