Alice Cooper says he's 'pure Detroit' at street naming, Eloise Asylum launch in Westland

https://www.freep.com/story/entertainment/music/brian-mccollum/2021/09/23/alice-cooper-court-westland-eloise-asylum/5833155001/

On a gray, drizzly day at one of Michigan’s most notorious mental institutions, Alice Cooper popped by to get a street in his name.

With a few hundred cheering fans watching, the Detroit-born rocker pulled a rope Thursday to reveal an “Alice Cooper Court” street sign on the grounds of the former Eloise Psychiatric Hospital in Westland.

“I love the idea that they’re naming streets after rock stars in Detroit,” he told the crowd, going on to suggest “Iggy Avenue” and “MC5 Street.” "There's probably more rock stars than politicians."

Alice Cooper Court — already on Google Maps — is now the formal name of the road off Michigan Avenue leading into the old hospital complex, famous in local lore for its creepy legends and haunted vibe.

How appropriate is that? For many years I lived just East of Eloise in Inkster and later just West of it in Wayne. My ex used to work in one of the last buildings to be torn down.
Lots of crazy local stories about it. It was fun to walk thru the connected grave yard that was part of it on the West side of the ole hospital.
Who better than Alice?

I don’t know if he is a magat, as I stopped paying attention to him as my music taste matured.

I still laugh at farts, though.

Passionate non-politics

Cooper is very outspoken about his political views–those being that he has none. In fact, he’s highly critical of rock musicians who get political, saying:

To me, that’s treason. I call it treason against rock-and-roll, because rock is the antithesis of politics. Rock should never be in bed with politics.3

Cooper would even go so far as to do the opposite of what everyone else is doing just to make a point. During the 2004 election season, he said:

When I read the list of people who are supporting Kerry, if I wasn’t already a Bush supporter, I would have immediately switched. Linda Ronstadt? Don Henley? Geez, that’s a good reason right there to vote for Bush.4

Apparently, it’s how he’s always been, and how he remains to this day. He muses about sitting between such political rocker icons as John Lennon and Harry Nilsson while they argued politics and thinking, ‘I don’t care.’5
