Minimum wage to increase Jan. 1 in Michigan

BFD. It's criminally low, especially for tipped employees. What a scam. Restaurants would pay the same wage. Tips are for service, and it costs restaurants nothing. As a former server, I resent the hell out of it.

I think a lot of people would support a system that paid servers $15/ hr and eliminated all tipping MichMan Dec 2021 #1

So sounds like the present system works pretty well for many servers then. MichMan Dec 2021 #3
How about $15 per hour plus tips? multigraincracker Dec 2021 #4

she'd go from grossing about 60K per year to around 28K.

So, goodbye mortgage payment and car payment just sell the house now and find a nice studio apartment. Kiss that health plan goodbye too.

Not every restaurant server or employee is an abused wage slave.

It seems like whenever these posts are made, the people that have the strongest opinions are the ones who seem to know what's good for someone else.

(I was being a bit facetious when I made my comment by the way)

Every wage earner wins. Management not so much, unless they raise prices.

Gas station attendants, tax preparers, grocery cashiers, bank tellers, auto mechanics, ..

Next time you fill up your tank for $50, do you give the gas station cashier an extra 20% ? What about the tire store when you get a new $600 set of tires ? "Let's see, let me leave a 20% tip of $125"

Are those employees routinely given tips as part of every transaction? Why not ?

Tips are traditionally presumed necessary for servers because it is customary as a supplement for having reduced base wages . Once they receive a living wage comparable to other workers, servers are no different than any other employee.

I will be happy when this occurs as I find the entire system distasteful and quite discrimatory.

Does an attractive young server with a lot of cleavage deserve to be compensated more than an mature heavier woman for doing the exact same job ? Is a server bringing you a $10 burger and fries less deserving of equal compensation than one serving you a $50 steak?

The price of gas had jumped almost a buck per gallon all over town. This station had not raised the price yet. there was a long line at the pumps and only that one lady there.
Despite all that she was being nice to everyone. I thought she had earned it.

I've also been known to give panhandlers a 20 when they ask for spare change.
