Embattled Albion College president resigns

ALBION – Albion College has started the search for a new leader after the resignation of embattled president Mathew Johnson.

The liberal arts college announced Dec. 24 it had accepted the resignation of Johnson, who is moving to an expanded role with the Commission for Public Purpose in Higher Education in partnership with the Carnegie Foundation. Johnson has been a fellow and director of community engagement projects for the foundation, according to his LinkedIn page.

“Though incredibly challenging, I have loved my time serving Albion and successfully leading the College through the pandemic and strengthening our financial position,” Johnson said in an announcement on the school's website. “I am proud of the change we accomplished together – and the change still under way."

Joe Calvaruso, an Albion native, alumnus and member of the Albion College Board of Trustees, is serving as the school's interim president as a national search for a new leader is underway.
