Detroit Free Press) Amid despair, we search for hope. We try to believe that this time, things will be different.
Three Michigan State University students are dead, their families in mourning. Their classmates are shaken, bereft of the security campus should provide. The MSU community and the school's expansive network of alumni, boosters and well-wishers is shaken to its core. The state waits anxiously for news of the five wounded, hospitalized victims. Our emotions are still raw; we are still reeling.
At this moment, it feels like something must change.
But it felt like that just 15 months ago, after a malevolent teenager at Oxford High School killed four of his classmates, injuring seven more. It felt this way after the Lunar New Year shootings in California, after Uvalde, after Pittsburgh, after Charlotte. After Las Vegas. Orlando. Sandy Hook. Littleton.
We know this moment. We've been here before.
What, this time, is different?
One vote.
Last fall, Michigan Democrats took the slenderest of majorities in each chamber of the state Legislature: One vote in the House. One vote in the Senate, where Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist could break a tie. .............(more)
