Detroit Renaissance High School becomes home to national chess champions


(Detroit Free Press) Several students from Detroit Renaissance High School have been named national chess champions after a tournament in Washington, D.C., last weekend.

The 2023 National High School Championship, which was held from March 31-April 2, typically sees around 1,300 to 1,400 players. This year, a record was with over 1,750 participants.

The event, hosted by the US Chess Federation, had various categories and Renaissance High School took first place in the K-12 Under 800 division. In 2022, the team placed eighth.

Jeremiah Young-Walker led the way for the team, finishing eighth in the category. He was followed by other teammates including Trintyn Chambers in 20th place and Shane Dwayne Crumsey in 35th. ................(more)
