Republicans suffered historic losses in Michigan in November. Democrats control all statewide offices and both chambers of the Legislature and their nominees hold a majority on the Michigan Supreme Court. Fundraising has cratered in recent years and many longtime donors say the far-right wing of the party, led by Karamo, is the problem, not the solution. But Karamo, who lost her own 2022 race to Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson by 14 percentage points but has not conceded, said she's confident she can lead a major turnaround in 2024.

Karamo's early leadership has been marked by what many see as a major misstep when the party, on social media, compared gun safety measures recently passed by the Democratic Legislature to the Holocaust. At the time, Karamo defended the post and refused to apologize, despite criticism from Jewish groups and many Republicans who said the comparison was both inaccurate and offensive.
Meanwhile, some of her past public comments, especially ones she made in a podcast she produced called "It's Solid Food," have continued to dog her. On Tuesday, CNN aired a piece that highlighted Karamo's past statements that Beyoncé was secretly recruiting Black Americans to paganism through a new album; that demonic possession is real and transferred via intimate relationships; and that acceptance of gay and transgender Americans will lead to the acceptance of pedophilia. She has also compared abortion to pagan child sacrifice, the report noted.

Satanism is "in scripture," and has been "part of Christian orthodoxy for thousands of years," she said. "What was one of Jesus' miracles? He did exorcisms. So it's not like I'm just saying something out of thin air. But I think because our society is very secular, that spiritual concept ... seems ludicrous, because we live in a highly secular society." .............(more)
