Brooklyn Ctr, MN Police pulled over black driver, fatally shot him, protesters tear-gassed

https://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2021/04/11/bca-reporting-to-officer-involved-shooting-in-brooklyn-center/
The story is being continuously updated

Brooklyn Center police say an officer fatally shot a driver Sunday, leading to some clashes between protesters and law enforcement. Here are the latest updates:

9:24 p.m.: A WCCO crew spotted several law enforcement vehicles, including Hennepin County Sheriff’s vans and armored trucks, headed towards the Brooklyn Center Police Department.

9:14 p.m.: Law enforcement are forming a human barricade outside of the Brooklyn Center Police Department, as more protesters gather.

8:19 p.m.: A WCCO crew at the scene is being told by activists that law enforcement is surrounding the area and “corralling” people in an apparent attempt to make mass arrests, like what happened last November during a protest that spilled onto Interstate 94 in Minneapolis.

8:01 p.m.: Protesters are continuing to push law enforcement back.

7:59 p.m.: Law enforcement has deployed tear gas into the crowd of protesters.

For non-Minnesotans, Brooklyn Center is the first suburb north of Minneapolis. Minneapolis is of course the city where George Floyd was murdered by then Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who has been on trial for the past 2 weeks.

Yes, the fatally shot driver is Black.

after telling the cop who pulled his car over, his girlfriend driving, that he was carrying and had a carry permit. Remember the cop panicked and started just shooting into the car.

Just as Brooklyn Center is the first suburb north of Minneapolis, Falcon Heights is the first suburb north of St. Paul.

Not that it's important, but Philando Castile was driving.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooting_of_Philando_Castile

Castile was driving with his partner, Diamond Reynolds, and her four-year-old daughter when at 9:00 p.m. he was pulled over by Yanez and another officer in Falcon Heights, a suburb of Saint Paul, Minnesota.[3][4] After being asked for his license and registration, Castile told Officer Yanez that he had a firearm (Castile was licensed to carry) to which Yanez replied, "Don't reach for it then", and Castile said "I'm, I, I was reaching for..." Yanez said "Don't pull it out", Castile replied "I'm not pulling it out", and Reynolds said "He's not..." Yanez repeated "Don't pull it out".[5] Yanez then fired seven close-range shots at Castile, hitting him five times.[6] Castile died of his wounds at 9:37 p.m. at Hennepin County Medical Center, about 20 minutes after being shot.[7]

Reynolds posted a live stream video on Facebook in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, and the incident quickly gained international interest...

((what happened earlier: -Progree))

... A St. Anthony police officer patrolling Larpenteur Avenue radioed to a nearby squad that he planned to pull over the car and check the IDs of the driver and passenger, saying, "The two occupants just look like people that were involved in a robbery. The driver looks more like one of our suspects, just because of the wide-set nose. I couldn't get a good look at the passenger."

((reflect for a moment on the above bold-faced quote (I added the bolding) -- one has a wide-set nose, the other he can't get a good look at, but "the two occupants just look like people that were involved in a robbery" --Progree))

... Castile was the driver, Reynolds was the front-seat passenger, and the child was in the back seat....

Brooklyn Center police said officers pulled over a driver they said had an outstanding arrest warrant, just before 2 p.m. on the 6300 block of Orchard Avenue. As officers were trying to arrest the driver, police say they tried to get back inside their vehicle. An officer then shot the driver, who then drove a couple blocks more before hitting another vehicle in the area of 63rd Avenue North and Kathrene Drive. No one in that second vehicle was hurt.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say the officers involved were believed to be wearing activated body cameras at the time of the shooting.

The victim’s mother, Katie Wright, spoke to the crowd. She said her son — 20-year-old Daunte Wright — had been killed by police. She said Wright’s girlfriend was in the car with him at the time of the traffic stop. Police say that woman suffered non-life threatening injuries in the crash, and was taken to North Memorial Health.

Wright’s mother said her son called her to say, “Mom, I’m getting pulled over,” and, “They’re asking about insurance.” She said she then heard officers telling him to get out of the car. When he asked why, officers told him they would explain once he got out of the vehicle. She said officers then told him to put his phone down, and then she heard someone telling her son not to run.

She then claimed an officer ended his call. She said soon after, her son’s girlfriend called her to say he had been shot. Wright’s mother said she went to the scene, and saw him “lifeless” by his car, which she had given to him just two weeks earlier.

Just before 11 p.m., an MPR News reporter witnessed stores being damaged and some looting underway at the Shingle Creek Crossing shopping center and nearby stores in Brooklyn Park. A large number of law enforcement officers were responding to the area.

MPR reporter's tweet 1047pm
Cars are pouring into Shingle Creek Crossing, with widespread break ins and looting going on. Many stores damaged. Lots of high speed traffic and violations. Area appears fairly dangerous, traffic wise.

Some new stuff that hasn't been posted before, various excerpts, bold-facing added by me:

At about 11:30 p.m., Brooklyn Center police declared the crowd an unlawful assembly and said anyone who remained at the scene — including journalists — would be arrested. Minnesota National Guard personnel were seen in the area of the police station, on Humboldt Avenue north of Interstate 94.

There also were police scanner reports of sporadic looting and property damage in Minneapolis in the early morning hours Monday, prompting a large law enforcement response.

Minnesota Department of Public Safety Commissioner John Harrington said more National Guard troops and state law enforcement personnel were headed into the Twin Cities and would be visible in the metro area this week, on top of personnel already in place for the ongoing Derek Chauvin trial.

Harrington said about 20 businesses had been damaged in the Shingle Creek retail area. ((Brooklyn Center))
