(5,125 posts)China has a history of female infanticide spanning 2,000 years.[1] When Christian missionaries arrived in China in the late sixteenth century, they witnessed newborns being thrown into rivers or onto rubbish piles.[2][3] In the seventeenth century Matteo Ricci documented that the practice occurred in several of China's provinces and said that the primary reason for the practice was poverty.[3] The practice continued into the 19th century and declined precipitously during the Communist era,[4] but has reemerged as an issue since the introduction of the one-child policy in the early 1980s.[5] The 2020 census showed a male-to-female ratio of 105.07 for mainland China, a record low since the People's Republic of China began conducting censuses.

(5,125 posts)Three children cap is still kind of "controlling" but at least this way, people won't be as likely to term a child due to the sex.

(5,125 posts)What is happening in China is largely the result of restrictions on family size by the government that forces people to choose.
Forcing women to birth every pregnancy, even rapes, even incest and if the life of the mother is at risk is still forcing the family into what the government expects.
EITHER way is controlling women, neither is about allowing women or families to choose something that actually makes sense.

(11,463 posts)During an interview on Fox News, host Mike Emmanuel told Emmer that multiple Republicans had scrubbed any mention of abortion rights from their campaign websites after the U.S. Supreme Court upended women's reproductive rights.
"I trust our candidates to know their districts and know how they're going to appeal to their voters, to the voters that are going to turn out in November and elect them to the next Congress," Emmer opined. "That being said, if Democrats want to make abortion the main issue when every poll we have seen says that the economy and the cost of living is the number one issue, good luck to them trying to defend their extreme position."
"Every one of them voted for what I call the 'Chinese genocide bill,' which would allow abortion up to moments before a child takes its first breath," he ranted. "I think our candidates know how to message that and they'll be just fine in the midterms."
The Chinese forced sterilization of Uyghur women, has been called tantamount to genocide.
But I agree with TigressDem that its probably a reference to abortion and infanticide in maintentance of the one-child, then two-child policies. I'm not sure what the policy is currently.
All this is still far from analogous to giving women the right to choose the outcome of their pregnancy.
