The Minnesota House voted on Friday to pass the states proposed transgender refuge bill that would safeguard trans youth who live in states with gender-affirming care bans and need to travel to Minnesota to receive care.
If signed into law, HF146 would prevent other states from seizing children from their families because theyre receiving gender-affirming care. The bill also protects families, trans people, and healthcare workers from extradition orders and legal repercussions associated with travel to Minnesota for care.
A court order for the removal of a child issued in another state because the
child's parent or guardian assisted the child in receiving gender-affirming care in this state must not be enforced in this state, the bill says.
The house passed the bill with a vote of 68-62 on Trans Day of Visibility, and it now moves to the Senate. Democratic Gov. Tim Walz has committed to signing it into law if it lands on his desk.

(19,058 posts)Their draconian laws will backfire on them. This is a losing issue that will cost them in 2024.
Democrats all over the country would be wise to hammer home of the discrimination taking place, the intolerance taking place by Republicans in things that do not affect them personally.

(6,349 posts)It is truly a shame that this now only means something in the blue states. In the red ones, there is little more than anarchy due to structured society being thwarted, intimidated, and even injured by the extreme fringe. It is disgusting. There is a part of me that is in total despair due to watching my home state fall into the oligarch-inspired mess that is has become. I just hope that the real North Carolinians will rise up and take care of the cancer that has overrun what was a great state.
My appreciation for Gov. Tim Walz and the Minnesota Assembly for this. It shows that there is still a bit of sanity in some states. Let's hope the rest pay enough attention to learn something.

(28,475 posts)It doesn't play well when we have such a large surplus and the GOP will push it constantly from now until the 2024 election. If a really good case for the increases can't be made, they need to back off it.
Fortunately, we'll hold on to the Senate (by our 1 vote) & the Governor as they aren't up for reelection but I worry if we lose the House all the progress we're making could be stopped cold.
