A fight inside Mankato East High School last week Friday is re-igniting the debate over school resource officers in Minnesota. In a video taken in the hallways of the school building, school officials say about 10 students were involved in that brawl. One of the students assaulted was Nashawn Williams son.
I was upset, said Williams. He had a blood clot in his right eye at the bottom and his upper torso was swollen They could have killed my son stomping him on the floor, like you all saw the video, they could have killed my son.
The fight comes after Supt. Paul Peterson told families in an email this month that SROs will not be physically located at MAPS schools but will be available on an on call basis to assist school staff.
Scott Hare, Director of Student Support Services with Mankato Area Public Schools, said police were called in to break up the fight. He added that if an SRO had been in the building, the situation would have looked different.
I know there is a lot of controversy over SROs (School Resource Officer) but would one have prevented this incident?
How is it that kids are so dismissive of consequences that they do not hesitate to have a 'rumble' in the school hallways? In years past they would have at least waited until they were outside, if not entirely off school property.
Classes had only begun on Tuesday.

(2,533 posts)Sounds like on campus police. But I've never seen that acronym-maybe a definition in the text would help. If it's there I missed it.

Sorry, thought it was fairly universal.

And I would suppose that qualifications vary by district and law - but a regular security guard does not generally have the full training and powers of a police officer. (although that too can vary widely)

(62,047 posts)... in the eighth grade at the junior high I went to at his age. Kid was shot (may have died) in a restroom during a beat-down.
My son was in private school a week later.
At the same time I don't know how this stuff gets fixed in the short term.
I don't think more or stricter rules, or arresting and treating kids 18 and under like adults works. I don't think more cops and jails and courts are the answer, either.
