A plea from North Memorial Health to the Legislature - published by a group of physicians in the strib

On the border of north Minneapolis and Robbinsdale, community members and families rely on care and healing provided by North Memorial Health Hospital, Robbinsdale. For over 70 years, it's been more than just a health care facility; it's a place of service for those in need. Yet, behind its steadfast commitment to serve all people lies a silent struggle.

With a rising number of Medicare and Medicaid patients and mounting complexities in the health care environment, tough choices lie ahead. Without assistance, the Robbinsdale hospital anticipates losses of $100 million by 2025.

(snip)

The Robbinsdale hospital serves as a "safety net" hospital without the benefit of any official designation that brings additional funding. Without commensurate funding assistance from local cities or counties, our hospital's operations, care teams and patients will be negatively impacted. The core patient population it serves is very similar to other urban hospitals in the region, like nearby Hennepin Healthcare's Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC). The only difference is that Hennepin Healthcare receives county assistance. North Memorial Health currently receives none.

Securing local help is crucial to ensure continued service to those in need.

At the same time, we need support at the Legislature (HF 3943/SF 3838), which would allow North Memorial Health to leverage available federal health care dollars.

These dollars, available under the Medicaid Directed Payment program, are designed to help hospitals overburdened with insufficient government reimbursements, like those from Medicare and Medicaid. More than 93 such programs are active at hospitals in 40 states that provide federal dollars; Minnesota has only one approved program.

It is where I go when I have health issues. They need to be assisted in their efforts if this is what is going on. I will also be contacting someone. This city cannot lose this hospital.

2. Hennepin County Board abandons deal to help North Memorial Hospital pay to care for the poor

From January

The Hennepin County Board cut short an agreement with North Memorial Health Hospital created to subsidize the cost of caring for residents without insurance and on medical assistance.

The board voted 5 to 1 on Jan. 2 to end a deal it initially approved in May that would have allocated $48 million to the Robbinsdale hospital by the end of 2024. It was designed as the first step toward a more permanent cost-sharing pact, but county and hospital leaders apparently could not come to terms.

In a statement, North Memorial officials said they were disappointed in the County Board's decision to "terminate our 2024 contract." County officials said the board decided to refocus its efforts on Hennepin Healthcare Systems, which runs HCMC.

I wish I knew then, I would have contacted my Commissioner.

'They' must want that location some kind of bad. I wonder who it is... developers? Some rich ass who doesn't like the fact that the hospital is close to that nice lake which has all kinds of expensive apartments and townhomes around and near it? The HOA of the local neighborhood that has decided that they don't like 'those people' walking down their sidewalks?

There is no telling. But I can tell you that I am not surprised at this action. Let's see what happens, I guess. (By the way, this kind of thing is going to happen more and more in the next few years. All levels of government are getting far too worried about money and not about people. The 'haves' are winning this battle. Soon, anyone with less than a million in assets is going to be considered a second class citizen. If they are not already.)
