. . . A new report from the State of the State Housing ( https://mhponline.org/state-of-the-states-housing-2024/ ) found that median rent jumped by 8% in the last year.
. . . According to the report, half of all renting families pay more than they can afford for housing. It also showed that evictions were up 8% over the previous year. That only adds to this tragic number: Close to 20,000 Minnesotans struggling with homelessness on any given night.
"Across Minnesota we are actually 114,000 units short that are available and affordable to our lowest income community members," Mavity said.

(28,596 posts)Study after study has shown that they decrease rental stock and drive up rents. Yet people still use them (please don't) and municipalities won't regulate them. I don't mean someone who rents out a room in an owner occupied house. There are whole buildings and lots of single family houses that are nothing but short term rentals.

(Some sites place Minnesota in the top ten of expensive places to live. Some put it more in the middle of the list. I wish there was a way to measure the greed factor in a given geographic area. That list would go a lot further in helping people decide where they want to live as opposed to 'economic factors' that only really pertain to a small percentage of the population.)
