Waste Management pays $3 billion for Advanced Disposal

NEW YORK — A national $3 billion deal means Rochester will eventually have two choices for trash hauling.

Waste Management is pushing into the eastern U.S. by paying $3 billion for its smaller rival, Advanced Disposal Services.

In late 2018, Waste Management also purchased the small southeastern Minnesota trash hauler, Garbage Man. There was a lot of disruption and unhappiness for several months as Waste Management struggled to expand its service to cover the former Garbage Man customers.

That led many Rochester homeowner to switch to the other two services available locally — Advanced Disposal and Sunshine Sanitation.
