Former MU employee in Mt. Vernon gets 4 years in prison for fraud
A former University of Missouri employee who worked in Mount Vernon was sentenced Tuesday to four years in federal prison for her role in a $781,000 fraud scheme.
Carla Rathmann, 55, was sentenced to the prison time after admitting she embezzled funds and used the money to gamble at casinos, go on vacations around the world and purchase expensive cars and a hot tub, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri.
In June, the release says, Rathmann pleaded guilty to mail fraud and credit card fraud, admitting she submitted phony invoices to the university and used a university credit card for personal expenses.
The release says Rathmann was hired in 2000 as an administrative officer at the university's Southwest Research Center in Mount Vernon. In her position, she was responsible for paying bills and payroll, among other things.
