Friend swindled $158,000 from man with mental handicap, Springfield police say

A Springfield man stole $158,000 over several years from a family friend who is mentally handicapped, police say.

Terry Ozborn, 58, has been charged with financial exploitation of a disabled person after a woman reached out to police and said money was taken from her brother's trust account.

The alleged crime is described in a probable cause statement, which said Ozborn became a legal guardian for Carl Rayburn in 2010 after Rayburn's parents died.

Ozborn sent papers to Rayburn's brother in Texas about making himself the sole legal guardian for Rayburn, the statement said, and Rayburn's brother signed them.
