SEIU Local 1 endorses St. Louis City Comptroller Darlene Green in re-election bid

St. Louis – The stakes are high for St. Louis working families on city contracts this election cycle. At Lambert International Airport, two multi-million dollar city contracts for janitorial and security services are pending award. Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1 currently represents 140 professional cleaners working for ABM & Revive Janitorial Services at the airport. The airport also has recently become ground zero in SEIU Local 1’s campaign to assist GardaWorld security officers throughout St. Louis in unionizing.

Recently, the St. Louis Business Journal, St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the Labor Tribune have reported on Local 1 and St. Louis working peoples’ efforts to organize a union for security officers at Lambert Airport amidst GardaWorld allegedly paying its workforce substandard wages.

SEIU Local 1 has endorsed Green for re-election because she stands with workers on these issues.

To ensure city contracts are awarded to employers based on factors other than the lowest bid, Board Bill 234 (BB234) was enacted into law in April 2024, by the St. Louis Board of Aldermen. Coupled with Ordinance 71769, which guarantees janitors and security officers retain employment during city contractor transitions, conditions may seem to be improving for service workers at the airport – but as with all statutory protections, they are only as valuable as their timely and consistent enforcement.
