Family of man who was fatally shot in the back by Omaha police officer in 2015 is suing city for $2M

The family of a man who was shot in the back by an Omaha police officer last year sued the city this week, asking for $2 million.

In a lawsuit filed Monday, the family of Danny Elrod asked for $1 million for wrongful death and another $1 million for his suffering after the Feb. 23 shooting.

In the filing, the family offered to settle the case for $500,000.

“We shouldn’t expect that unarmed people are going to be shot and killed, and shot in the back no less, as they’re posing no direct threat to officers,” said the family’s attorney, Brian Jorde of Domina Law Group.
