Blood or urine? Bill could change Nevada marijuana DUI tests

Blood tests may become the standard way to test for stoned drivers in Nevada.

Assemblyman Steve Yeager, D-Las Vegas sponsored a bill on Friday that would eliminate urine tests as a way to test drivers suspected of driving under the influence of marijuana.

Yeager called it a common sense change. The bill would require testing for a specific marijuana metabolite in the blood that is intoxicating. Current urine tests sometimes test for non-intoxicating metabolites.

"We should only be testing for the metabolite that impairs you. A number of law enforcement agencies in the state don’t currently test for that metabolite," Yeager said, adding that two Touro University medical students brought the issue to his attention.
