Thousands of Nevada students apply for free community college

With a 4.0 GPA, experience as a volunteer basketball coach and mentor to middle school students and an admirable career goal, Hug High School senior Erynn Dardy likely will have eager colleges lined up at her door.

But Dardy, 18, has her sights set on Truckee Meadows Community College.

She is one of more than 12,000 high school students across the state who have applied for the Nevada Promise Scholarship, a program that promises a free education at one of the state’s four community colleges.

Nearly 1,800 Washoe County high school seniors, including Dardy, have applied for the program at Truckee Meadows Community College.
