Nonprofit launches lawsuit challenging N.H. voter ID law

CONCORD, N.H. – A new voter ID law signed by Governor Chris Sununu last week is facing its first legal challenge, which seeks to permanently block the state from enacting it.

The New Hampshire Youth Movement, a nonprofit focused on issues impacting young people, filed a lawsuit in federal court on Tuesday arguing the new law is unnecessary and unconstitutional.

The lawsuit said the new law will make it “substantially harder” to vote and, in some cases, impossible.

Starting after the election in November, the law will require that voters provide documentary proof of citizenship when they register to vote by presenting a birth certificate, passport, or naturalization papers, for example. And when people go to the polls, the new law will require them to present a photo ID, such as a driver’s license.
