Sununu dismisses worries over inaugural fund

In his first public comments on the issue, Gov. Chris Sununu on Thursday dismissed concerns that he, his family and close advisers benefited improperly from a nonprofit set up to pay for his inaugural parties.

Speaking on NHPR’s “The Exchange,” the newly reelected governor said The Sununu Inaugural Celebration Inc., which was overseen by his sister and senior adviser, “followed the law to the letter.”

“People want to make political hay out of something. It is what it is,” Sununu said, adding that he “stands by every expenditure it ever made.”

The Union Leader reported on Sunday that The Sununu Inaugural Celebration Inc., a 501c(4) nonprofit, received more than $450,000 from primarily corporate and lobbyist donors with business before the government. Since Sununu’s inauguration parties in early 2017, the committee has paid out more than $165,000 of that to the governor and his inner circle.
