Longport has become the first town on Absecon Island to ban smoking on its beaches.
The ban, which prohibits all kinds of smoking, including cigars, pipes, and electronic devices on the beaches of this affluent Jersey Shore town, carries an initial fine of $250 and can rise to $1,000 for repeated offenses.
After a resident complained that other activities famously banned on New Jersey beaches were not enforced such as ball-playing and picnicking Longport Mayor Nicholas Russo said the city would look into repealing those old ordinances.
Which might make Longport one of the only beaches in New Jersey to officially allow picnics and Frisbee-playing.

(113,130 posts)but gawd, is anything more disgusting than that forest of butts sticking out of the sand next to where a smoker has been? Ugh!
At least the e-cigs don't leave that kind of nasty debris behind.

(11,686 posts)ashes, and discarded tobacco but electronic devises confuses me. I am not a smoker and do not like to be around smokers but if outside the electric ones are not as bad and crap can not be thrown on the ground.

(5,829 posts)One suspects there are some snobs who don't want to share w/ hoi polloi.
BTW, the cig ban is ridiculous. W/ all that open air & nearly continuous breeze, smoke not likely to affect neighbors. If they were worried about butts littering beach, just count them among objects that are considered litter. Hard to believe there isn't a fine for leaving trash around.

(2,678 posts)When I was a child, sure, I would go to the beach while on vacation in Wildwood, NJ. When we go to Daytona Beach and the whole group goes to the beach I'm up in the air conditioned room, away from the sun & sand. Getting old, I guess.
