No deal: New Jersey state shutdown will drag into Monday
TRENTON -- Gov. Chris Christie is calling New Jersey lawmakers back to Trenton on Monday as state officials failed to broker a deal to end the state government shutdown Sunday.
The stalemate over the state budget already closed state parks and beaches over the July 4 holiday weekend. But Monday -- the third day of the shutdown -- the impact on New Jersyans will be more widely felt, with state offices deemed nonessential scheduled to close and tens of thousands of state workers set to be furloughed.
Christie has called for a special session of the New Jersey Legislature to begin at 10 a.m.
At issue: State Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto (D-Hudson) won't let lawmakers vote on a bill restructuring Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey that has bipartisan support and was approved by the Senate. Prieto said he's blocking it because he believes it's bad policy.
