CarePoint Health to lay off 44 hospital employees despite owners pocketing $157 million
CarePoint Health, whose owners pocketed $157 million through business practices questioned in a state report, plans to lay off dozens of employees at its three hospitals.
Bayonne Medical Center, Christ Hospital and Hoboken Medical Centers unions were notified by CarePoint Health administrators Monday that layoff notices were to be sent out to at least 44 employees in the coming weeks.
A state report released in March revealed CarePoint Healths three hospitals had paid management companies created by their owners $157 million from 2013 to 2016, even though the management companies had no employees and limited operating expenses.
While layoffs are a common course of action for CarePoint, this does raise eyebrows in light of the scathing report released just a few months ago which highlighted questionable business practices and financial transactions made by the company," said Debbie White, a registered nurse and president of the Health Professionals and Allied Employees (HPAE) union, which represents nurses at Christ Hospital and all union workers at Bayonne Medical Center.
