N.J. voter registration laws binds hand of judge

A Monmouth County woman won’t be able to vote this year because she missed the voter registration deadline by four days.

The woman told Superior Court Judge Linda Grasso Jones that she wasn’t aware of the October 15 deadline.

“I take care of my mom. She’s 89, wheelchair-bound. It’s not that that’s an excuse, but I guess I just did not have a handle on the deadline for registration,” said the woman, whose name is being withheld by the New Jersey Globe. “I didn’t realize that it had to be 21 days out of this election, and I would really love to be able to vote in this election.”

This isn’t the first time Grasso Jones has had to deliver bad news to voters – that she is ‘bound” by a statute with a hard registration deadline. But it seems to break her heart each time.

Yesterday

but I did know about having to live in an NJ county for 30 days in order to be considered a legal resident -- so I moved a week earlier.
