Point Pleasant Beach motel fire under investigation
Eyewitness News
POINT PLEASANT BEACH (WABC) -- Investigators are searching for the cause of the fire at a Point Pleasant Beach motel that left 4 dead and 8 others injured.
Autopsies are being conducted on the bodies of the 4 victims, who were all adult males. They have not yet been identified. 8 others suffered injuries.
Arson investigators are combing through the debris in their effort to find the cause, a process that's expected to take several days. The flames broke out at the two-story Mariner's Cove Motor Inn in Point Pleasant Beach just before 6 a.m. Friday. Fire shot through roof of the structure, which is located just a few blocks from the beach.
Authorities say several of the 25 units were occupied by an estimated 40 people, some of them displaced Superstorm Sandy victims, and one woman had to be rescued by firefighters after she holed herself up in her shower to avoid the smoke and flames.
