Ex-Washington Twp. councilman (R) indicted on forgery charges

A former Washington Township councilman who resigned earlier this year after getting caught on a surveillance video mailing venomous, anonymous letters to two women on the school board has been indicted on forgery charges.

The four-count indictment by a grand jury in Gloucester County was filed on Wednesday. Each count carries an 18-month prison term, although first offenders rarely face the maximum penalty.

Richard Bennett faced harassment charges after law enforcement found that he allegedly mailed the letters from the Blackwood Post Office, having purchased metered stamps at the counter at about 2:47 PM on May 12.

The detective, Anthony R. Aquilino, traced the transaction record on the stamp and pulled up video surveillance footage showing Bennett mailing the letters. Bennett paid cash for the postage, but Aquilino said he could identify the individual as Bennett.
