Christie spokesman: Governor had no role in friendly Trump tax deal

TRENTON — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie "had no knowledge or involvement in" a settlement that Donald Trump's one-time Atlantic City casino company reportedly struck in 2011 to pay only a fraction of the millions of dollars in taxes it owed to the state, the governor's spokesman told NJ Advance Media.

The New York Times
reported Tuesday night that public records showed the company founded by Trump, now the Republican presidential nominee, reached the deal less than two years after Christie took office, following years of pursuits in the courts.

Under the agreement, the company paid only $5 million of the nearly $30 million it owed to New Jersey — or 17 pennies on the dollar. (Read the full settlement below.)

The newspaper said it was not clear whether Christie, a longtime friend who is now a top adviser to Trump, was involved.

I represent taxpayers before various tax authorities. I really doubt Christie had anything to do with this. Tax authorities can settle for a fraction of what is owed if they think they might lose an appeal or if they think it's best to take a reduced amount from a financially strapped taxpayer before they go completely broke.
