Will independents turn out for New Mexico's first semi-open primary?

Tuesday’s highly anticipated primary election marks the first time New Mexico’s growing population of unaffiliated voters will be able to cast a ballot without the cumbersome task of changing their registration to either Democrat or Republican.

Apparently, they didn’t get the message.

The New Mexico Secretary of State’s Office did little to inform them directly of a new law intended to increase voter turnout in primaries.

Advocacy organizations that have been reaching out to voters who “decline to state” a party affiliation say many were unaware the June 2 election is the state’s first semi-open primary, allowing them to select the major party ballot of their choice. And early voting data shows low numbers of them have cast ballots.
