Unemployment rates dropped last month in Orange, Sullivan and Ulster counties compared to a year ear

Unemployment rates dropped last month in Orange, Sullivan and Ulster counties compared to a year earlier.

Figures released Tuesday by the state Department of Labor showed Orange County’s rate dropped to 3.9 percent from 4.8 percent in May 2015. Ulster also registered an unemployment rate of 3.9 percent, down from 4.9 percent.

Sullivan County’s rate dropped to 4.3 percent last month, the highest in the seven-county mid-Hudson region, but a drop from 5.6 percent a year earlier.

Overall, the region had an unemployment rate of 3.8 percent last month, the lowest level in May since 2007, said Johny Nelson, state labor analyst. There were 43,600 unemployed people in the region last month, down from 53,300 in May 2015.

There were 173,600 employed Orange County residents last month, up from 169,900 in May 2015, or a 3.7 percent gain, according to the state’s figures. Ulster County had 86,000 employed residents, up from 84,900, and there were 32,100 employed Sullivan County residents, a gain of 100 from a year earlier.
