SUNY Binghamton says 'Stop White People' program title is being used ironically
The State University of New York at Binghamton says its new "Stop White People" program shouldn't be taken literally.
SUNY Binghamton, also known as Binghamton University, is offering an educational training course to resident advisors (R.A.'s) called "#StopWhitePeople2k16." The course, taught by three R.A.'s, tackles racial situations for "uneducated people" and aims to "help others take the next step in understanding diversity, privilege, and the society we function within."
The story went viral this week, as many criticized the title and description as being divisive and racist at a public school.
However, Binghamton University officials told The Press & Sun Bulletin that "Stop White People" is based on a Twitter hashtag used ironically. BU Vice President for Student Affairs Brian Rose said the educational content is not "anti-white" and was not created by the college itself.
