Navy awards $149M contract to Lockheed Martin Syracuse for missile defense

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Navy has awarded Lockheed Martin's plant in suburban Syracuse a $148.9 million contract to begin full production of electronic warfare defenses for its ships.

The decision to move forward means the Navy has committed to spending more than $500 million with Lockheed to upgrade the fleet's missile defenses through the Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program, or SEWIP, according to Pentagon officials.

Lockheed Martin's plant at Electronics Park in Salina previously received contracts to provide more than $350 million in electronic defense upgrades to aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers and other Navy ships as part of the Block 2 phase of SEWIP.

SEWIP provides the Navy ships with early detection, analysis, threat warning and protection from anti-ship missiles.
